Someone That Turns Your Heart Around

Acrylic on canvas
This painting is not just a large-format object. It is a transition. It shows what becomes possible when we shed our fear like a skin that has become too tight and find the courage to encounter ourselves anew.
In Someone That Turns Your Heart Around, life glows in powerful red, supported by deep ultramarine and interwoven with bright pastel yellow that casts light on inner shadows. It is the feeling of lightness after the trembling. The wonder at your own courage. The moment you fall in love – not with someone, but with who you yourself have become.
Growth begins where I surprise myself.
Stepping out of your comfort zone is a step into freedom – this work shows that in all its vibrant facets. It was created over the course of four weeks, directly in the shop window of the Modern Art Gallery in Karlsruhe. A stage I had never wished for. The idea came from gallery owner Marie-Louise Seidel – and at first, it seemed unbearable to me. Too public. Too much opinion, too little protection.
But at the beginning of 2023, I took on the challenge. Not because I wasn’t afraid anymore, but because I felt: I am allowed to grow into this. I am allowed to find out who I am when I don’t hide. I worked on ladders, created distance, sought perspective. Music on my headphones helped me stay with myself. Again and again, Arthur’s Theme accompanied me – especially the line “Someone that turns your heart around.” It became a symbol for this experience: between proximity and distance, inner world and outer gaze, floating and grounding.
The painting is a reminder of the power of setting out. And that beyond fear, a new version of ourselves often reveals itself.
About the visual language
The generous visual language with gestural brushstrokes gives the work an immediate vitality. In the center, petals or butterfly wings unfold – gentle, fluttering, as if they were just beginning to take flight. They rest like a quiet breath over the multi-layered, colorful background – and bring everything into balance.
This moving stillness makes the work appear light and vibrating at the same time. A field of tension between energy and serenity is created – like a conscious pause in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For the viewer, this means: a clear focus in a permanently changing world.
A cool pastel yellow spreads out like the wings of a brimstone butterfly – delicate, almost weightless. In between, rich red tones and glowing ultramarine – like the eye pattern of a peacock butterfly – confidently take center stage. It is a dialogue between lightness and depth, between uncertainty and hope, courage and fear.
The process began long before the first brushstroke. The idea developed from a small A5 drawing. Then practical steps followed: a large frame, a temporary studio in the middle of the gallery. All of this created the space in which the painting could come to life.
For four weeks, I worked in an open environment instead of my quiet studio. This required structure and new routines – and I found them. A rhythm emerged that allowed for focus and presence. The result reflects this clarity and self-assurance.
There were voices from the outside – “The orange is better,” “I prefer light green.” Many gave me their opinion on colors and shapes. These voices were loud – and that is exactly why it was important to stay with myself and trust my own decision. And encounters that inspired. One of them: the musician Rainer Markus Wimmer, whose sounds became part of the painting.
Someone That Turns Your Heart Around is for people who feel that a new chapter is ahead. It serves as a reminder: change is not an exceptional state, but part of life – and that we are allowed to fall in love with ourselves over and over again.
For me, it was an expression of self-conquest: not adaptation, but brave decisions. The first step may seem difficult, but it can be gentle and powerful at the same time. Change starts with you.
The painting is ideal for high rooms, maisonettes, and open floor plans.
